Union Songs

Burma

A Song by John Tomlinson©John Tomlinson 2007

Chorus:
Aung San, Aung San;
Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San, Aung San;
Aung San democracy.

I went to a Buddhist country
where the nights are never cold
where saffron robes cannot protect
and the truth cannot be told.

I found in that far-off country
that troops have stolen freedom,
that democracy has been crushed
to protect the Junta's kingdom.

The dictatorship is crumbling
in a thousand different ways
protecting monks by linking arms
people hope for better days.

Repression has its uses
for those who hold the power
people can’t be cowered forever
they’ll have their finest hour.
