Come All You Men In Parliament

A Song by Paul McHugh©Paul McHugh 2007

Come all you men in Parliament,
And tell it to me true,
Do millionaires all make themselves,
Just like they claim to do

Come all you men in Parliament,
And tell it to me plain,
Is it really true the more you work,
The more that you will gain

Come all you men in Parliament,
And please do tell to me,
If honest labour really pays,
Then why my poverty

Come all you men in Parliament,
Now don’t you tell a lie,
If I graft hard will I one day,
Be rich before I die

Come all you men in Parliament,
I work and slave away,
So will I get a big reward,
To call my own someday

Come all you men in Parliament,
And tell me why, oh, why,
The promise we all work hard for,
Is such a blatant lie

Notes

Many thanks to Paul McHugh for permission to add this song to the Union Songs collection.

Paul writes:
"As a poet/singer in a folk duo based in the U.K, (and a lifelong socialist)I thought you might be interested in the lyrics to one of our songs. I was inspired to write this by a friend who works as a nurse and expressed her frustration at having to work so hard at her vocation, helping look after people in their time of need, and having so little to show for it. She told me that she once believed that the harder one works, the more one would reap the benefits, but has found from experience that this is not true."
